Santana watched as the blonde remained silent and fiddled with her food. She didn’t know how to take that reaction. She took the last bite of her salad. “I’m just glad there’s someone else willing to stand up to Mr. Schue.” Brittany had changed the subject fast and Santana felt somewhat grateful. She took a sip of her drink, trying to remember if she heard about anything going on with Quinn. After a few moments, she shrugged. “I didn’t see anyone over the summer, and I didn’t see her in Glee Club either. Maybe she’s just taking some time away from the groups to sort some things out. The past few years haven’t been that good to her.” Santana felt bad for Quinn. She had gone through a lot over the past few years, and she was beginning to pull away, like Santana thought was best to do. They had been best friends growing up, and she didn’t just want to abandon Quinn, but she didn’t want to overstep boundaries either. She noticed that Brittany had barely touched her food, and had just been playing with it. “Are you okay, Britt?”

“Yea, maybe.” Brittany replied thinking  about Quinn and all she had been through in the last couple of years. “I guess I would need to sort things out if I had been through what she has.” Brittany really missed hanging with Santana and Quinn the way they used to. She just wished they could go back a couple years when they were all on the cheerios and life seemed so much simpler. “Uh” Brittany was deep in thought about Quinn when Santana asked her if she was ok. “Yea, I’m alright San.” Brittany said trying to sound upbeat and peppy. “Why do you ask?”

The childhood years where the three were inseparable were long gone, but it seemed like their senior year was going to pass by without the three of them spending any time together. Santana couldn’t tell if there was something off or not about the way Brittany answered her. “I don’t know. Just because you haven’t eaten much. You used to tell me how you thought this food was the best food ever when we came to eat here last year.” Santana smiled, recalling the memories. She took another sip of her drink, finally finishing it off. “It’s okay if you’re not hungry, it’s not like I’m going to force you to eat.” Santana said with a laugh. She thought back to cheerio practice and thought that maybe Brittany wasn’t eating because of what Coach Sylvester said. She never took anything coach said seriously, because she knew that her and Britt would never get kicked off the cheerios, since they were two of the best people on the team. “If this is about what Coach Sylvester said, don’t worry about it. She won’t kick you off the team, you’re one of the best people we have.”

“Thanks San.” Brittany said reaching out and touching the brunette’s hand gently.  She quickly retracted her hand hoping she wasn’t making Santana uncomfortable. Brittany was just really happy that the Santana thought she had a nice voice. Although she acted like she was confident about it, her voice was the one feature she was most concerned about. She couldn’t belt things out like Rachel or Mercedes, and she didn’t have a soulful blues voice like Santana. She wasn’t quite sure where she fit in within the spectrum of singing.

Brittany shrugged knowing Santana was right about Rachel. The little Broadway hopeful didn’t do well when she wasn’t the star of the show. Listening to Santana talk about Sebastian Brittany caught a slight pain in her stomach. She convinced herself it was hunger because she wasn’t really eating her salad, although deep down she knew it was something else. “You like that new kid don’t you?” Brittany asked with a curious expression on her face, trying to not look sad at that potential answer. She honestly just wanted Santana to be happy, even if it wasn’t with her.

Santana smiled as Brittany reached over to touch her hand. She squeezed the blonde’s hand gently, then Brittany quickly retracted her hand, she didn’t understand why. She tried not to think that she had made Brittany upset, because she hated seeing the blonde upset. “You’re welcome Britt, it’s the truth.” She said softly. She looked down at her salad and moved it around with her fork, before taking another bite. She suddenly felt nervous.

As Brittany mentioned Sebastian, Santana bit her lip and looked down at her salad again. She looked up after a few moments, her eyes meeting Brittany’s. She took a breath. “I don’t really know him that well, so I wouldn’t say I like him.” That was the truth. It might change in the future, but she barely knew the boy, they had just met. She took a sip of her iced tea, her eyes still fixed on Brittany.

When Brittany saw Santana bite her lip at the mention of Sebastian, her heart dropped. It was true she liked him. From that little gesture Brittany knew. If Santana started to play with her figures the tall blonde was screwed. The brunette did that sometimes when she was really nervous about something. Brittany knew the possible answer to her question was yes, she just wasn’t prepared to see it. The familiar pain entered her stomach again, but Brittany made sure not to show it on her face. Santana was looking at her for any signs of a reaction, Brittany was determined not to give her a bad one. She smiled and took a sip of her lemonade to help push down the lump that was blocking her throat. Maybe she was over reacting. Santana said she didn’t really know him, so she couldn’t say she liked him. But Brittany could see the potential was there. “Well, he seems nice enough I guess. Still think he looks like a meerkat, but he ragged on Mr. Schue’s hair so that makes him ok in my book.” The blonde shrugged looking down and fiddling around with her salad a little more. Trying to change the subject because it was obviously an awkward topic for both of them, “What has been going on with Quinnie lately? She hasn’t been around so much and I totally thought she would come back to the cheerios this year.”

“You have a nice voice though, Britt.” Mr. Schue only ever picked Rachel and Finn to sing at competitions, unless it was a group performance. It was a miracle that she was even able to get a solo at last years sectionals. She thought about maybe bringing that up to Mr. Schue next time they had Glee Club. She did really want Brittany to get some solos this year. Santana felt her cheeks redden as Brittany went on about her voice. “That means a lot, Britt. We all know Berry will probably throw a tantrum if she doesn’t get the solo, so I might as well just let her have it.” She was touched that Brittany believed in her that much. She laughed as she remembered Sebastian’s joke about Mr. Schue’s hair. “I never found out where he transferred from, but I like him. He’s actually pretty nice.”

Santana smiled as Brittany complimented her, but she didn’t believe it herself. “Thanks Britt.” She thought for a moment over Brittany’s question about the Glee Club, taking another small bite of her salad. “Not right now. I don’t think Mr Schuester likes me much after the other day, and we’ll stand a better chance at winning sectionals if Berry sings. I want you to sing more in Glee Club.” Everyone was always captured by Brittany’s dancing, but the blonde was a very good singer, too. She mostly only got to showcase her dancing at competitions, and Santana didn’t think it was far. Glee Club was about singing. “I’ll help you get a solo, Britt.”

“Thanks Santana. Mr. Schue doesn’t like my voice though. He just lets me be in Glee because I’m a strong dancer.” Brittany took a sip of her lemonade and picked over the salad a little more. She really wasn’t eating it, just moving the lettuce around. “I don’t know why you think we have a better chance at winning sectionals if Rachel sings. Yes she has an amazing voice, but you were the one that won sectionals for us sophomore year not Rachel. San, I don’t think you know how good you are.” Brittany said slightly blushing. “Don’t worry about what happened in Glee the other day. Mr. Schue totally had it coming. Plus that Sebastian kid was the one who really got him mad. Where did that kid come from anyway? He dresses funny/”

Santana laughed as Brittany crossed her eyes, explaining that she had been dizzy. “You’re the best cheerio we have, Britt. That’s why Coach pushes you the hardest.” She said softly. It was true. If anyone was going to help them win Nationals, it would be Brittany. She had never seen anyone as dedicated as she was. Seeing Brittany like this made her miss the old times, before that night during their sophmore year.

As Brittany brought up Candance, she frowned. She remembered that girl as a huge bitch. She always thought she was the best cheerleader, when in reality, Santana’s abuela was ten times better than she was. That one summer, she had snapped back at Candance after receiving orders and the girl never spoke again during camp. She smiled as Brittany told her that she purposely ran into Candance during a routine, and took a sip of her drink. “I’m sure it wasn’t.” Santana answered, grinning back.

“No way San, you’re the best cheerio we have. That’s why coach made you captain.” Brittany couldn’t help but smile when talking about Santana. She didn’t think the girl gave herself enough credit; in cheerios or glee club. Brittany loved hearing Santana sing, her voice was amazing. “Are you going to try and get a solo this year in glee?” Brittany asked picking at her salad. She really didn’t want to gain any weight before next weeks weigh in. The salad might not be much, but it was more than she thought she could afford in calories.

Santana smiled as Brittany complimented her, but she didn’t believe it herself. “Thanks Britt.” She thought for a moment over Brittany’s question about the Glee Club, taking another small bite of her salad. “Not right now. Santana nodded. “She just really wants us to win Nationals again, since we didn’t get it last year.” She was getting used to Coach Sylvester’s harsh words, but she was really trying to beat them into the ground this year. “I’m really sorry I couldn’t make it to cheer camp, Britt.” Her mind wandered back to their sophmore year at cheer camp. That one night when everyone got a little too tipsy and something went down between the two girls. Santana couldn’t bring herself to go back during the summer. Ever since the drunken kiss, the butterflies wouldn’t leave whenever Brittany was around, and no matter how hard she tried to ignore them, they would just come back. It scared the hell out of her. She snapped out of her thoughts as the waitress came back with their drinks and salads. Santana took a small bite of hers, her eyes fixed on Brittany.

“Yea, I know, but three extra tumbling passes at the end of the already twenty minutes long routine almost killed me. I slammed right into Sara after my last aerial. I was so dizzy.” Brittany crossed her eyes to demonstrate how dizzy she felt after the routine. She hoped it would make Santana laugh. She missed hearing her laugh, and seeing her smile. Things were a little weird between them junior year; ever since they came back from cheer camp after their sophomore year. The night they kissed was the best night of Brittany’s life, but Santana didn’t seem to feel the same way. Santana always acted like it was nothing, so Brittany never brought it up. But she did notice that ever since then Santana had kind of been a little more distant around her.

“It’s ok San. I know things come up,” she said with a little sadness in her voice. She tried to counter it by telling Santana what she missed. “That Candace girl was back again this year. Since you weren’t there to keep her in check she was awful. Telling everybody what to do, acting like she was in charge. I ran into her during a tumbling routine too. Except that wasn’t an accident.” Brittany said with a sly grin on her face.

Santana laughed as Brittany crossed her eyes, explaining that she had been dizzy. “You’re the best cheerio we have, Britt. That’s why Coach pushes you the hardest.” She said softly. It was true. “Yea I was totally surprised when you agreed to let me pick you up.” Brittany laughed as they walked over to the hostess and said table for two. The girls were seated and given menus. They had been there million times before but Brittany always liked look over the menu just in case something changed. She couldn’t help but keep peeking over the top of the menu at Santana. Brittany had a crush on the brunette since they were Freshmen, but she never thought her best friend noticed. They were just friends and she was fairly sure that was the way Santana wanted to keep it. “So San, you know what you want?” the blonde inquired.

“Well, I do owe you for not showing up to cheer camp, it’s the least I could do.” She smiled. “It wasn’t that bad.” She laughed, following the hostess as she led them to a table. Santana was happy that the blonde had asked her to hang out, but things had gotten complicated for her recently. These butterflies when she was around Brittany, she didn’t know what to do. She caught Brittany looking at her over the menu and smiled. She was glad her smile was hidden. She couldn’t help but think she hurt Brittany every time she tried to distance herself, or that time when she told Brittany she thought Sebastian was cute. It was true, but she felt bad. She didn’t know how to deal with what she was feeling. “I’m not very hungry, I think I’ll go with a salad and an iced tea. What about you?”

Remembering Coach Slyvester’s words from practice earlier Brittany agreed, “I’m not really hungry either. I think I will join you with that salad and get a lemonade.” She smiled one more time behind the menu before setting it down. “Practice this afternoon was brutal. I think Coach is actually trying to kill us this year.” Feeling suddenly nervous Brittany started twirling her hair between her fingers.

As they began to drive, Santana remembered Brittany’s driving habits. It had been far too long since the two had spent time together. As they sped down the road way over the speed limit, Santana began to fear that they would get stopped by the cops, and the whole night would be ruined. As they pulled into Breadstix, Santana let out a sigh of relief. They had made it there fine, with no accidents or anything. She climbed out of the car and headed inside, following Brittany. “I’m fine. It’s just been so long that I’ve forgotten how you drive.” She laughed.

Santana smiled, following him into the kitchen. “I’ll have to sneak a look sometime later, now I’m intrigued. I don’t know if I should be worried or not, though.” She grinned back at him and glanced around the kitchen, admiring the house. When he asked her where they should have dinner, she didn’t know what to answer. To her, it didn’t really matter. “I don’t really mind where we eat, the living room is fine.” She didn’t really need a fancy dinner, a dinner in front of the TV was just fine for her, and she assumed he felt the same way.

“Cool, yeah. I’m fine with the living room.” He gave her a smile before pulling out some plates, forks, and knives. He put them down in the living room and picked up the remote, handing it to her. “You can choose something. Food’s almost done, so I’ll go take care of that.” He shrugged and walked back to the kitchen, pulling the sauce and water off the stove before finishing it up. Spaghetti was easy, that’s one reason why he chose it. He brought the pot into the other room and set it down on the table, on a small towel so it wouldn’t damage the surface.

Santana watched as he left the room to go get the food, and stared down at the remote in her hands. She didn’t know what to do, she didn’t want to watch something that would make things awkward between them. She sat down on the couch and clicked the power button, beginning to flick through the channels. Since it was Valentine’s Day, most of the channels were showing romance movies. She looked up at him as he returned with the food. “There’s seriously nothing on but romance movies.” She laughed. “So, Love Actually or When Harry Met Sally? I’ve narrowed it down to those two, the other ones playing are the really cheesy movies.”

Santana followed him up to the door and walked inside the house as he held the door open for her, smiling back at him. She laughed as Sebastian told her he lived in a normal house. “Damn there goes my spy and serial killer theories.” She joked, making a pouty face. She looked around the house for a few moments, before turning back to Sebastian. “Spaghetti’s fine, you don’t have to make a big deal out of everything for me.” She elbowed him playfully. He seemed nervous, and Santana thought it was cute.

Sebastian laughed, shaking his head. “Just don’t look in the closet in my room.” He joked along with her, grinning. Obviously, he had nothing to hide. Maybe he should avoid his room, though. It’s really dorky and childish. “Okay, if you say so. I was just making sure.” He nodded, smiling and walking into the kitchen. “Where should we eat? Dining room or living room? I figured dining room might be too formal, but then again, we are having dinner.” He usually enjoyed laid-back dinners in front of the TV, but for someone else, he’d definitely eat at the table. It was only polite.

Santana smiled, following him into the kitchen. “I’ll have to sneak a look sometime later, now I’m intrigued.
